Omark/Sportco 44 Scope base
I got an old sportco 44 that my father in law wants a scope base installed on. I read some places that the 1 piece Savage Short Action fits with minor modification, but it does not.
The radius is the same but I will only be able to drill and tap for 2 of the 4 screw on the base.
Anybody mounted one before and what did you use for base?
I was thinking of getting a Savage blank from EGW and drill it myself to mount at least 3 screws. It is a really short receiver. I'll get measurement later.
Cheers

Overall mounting length is 4.75'. I checked and if I use a Rem700 1 piece base, It would fit with 3 screws, but I would have to machine the aft Radius to 1.35' and cut just past the front screw.

I did one recently, and had to drill new holes in the mount and machine away some clearance for the recoil lug, in this rifle it has an adapter instead, but you get the idea. The reason I put this mount on was that the one he had on it previously ended at the recoil lug, and therefore the scope could not be mounted far enough forward to be ideal.

Was there a hole at the back for peep sight and a flat portion just in front of that?

Yes, I had to machine up a screw to suit it.Originally Posted by gstprecisionWas there a hole at the back for peep sight and a flat portion just in front of that? - Aluminum

Here it is. After some research I opted for a 1 piece base. I used a Rem700 EGW that I machined the rear radius to match the front radius of 1.35'. Here is my set-up for machining the base... does not look good but it worked.
And here it is on the mill for the drilling. I stayed with a 0.504 spacing in case a future owner decide to revert to single piece weaver bases;
